Elements
Using the font Berlin Sans FB, I created posters following the theme of the four elements: Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. For these I can only use black and white so I have to rely on shape language and visual hints to get the feeling across.
Earth
The main body imitates loose dirt, the scribbles on the top are meant to be roots and they’re attached to the foliage that sit on top of the letters. I used a lot of the pre-existing brushes in the Photoshop library to add all the textures and leaves.
Fire
A lot of layer styles were played with to create the white outline and fuzzy grey inside. I used the smudge tool to create the little smudges around the word’s perimeter. Finally I used a transparent image of flames to fit the words.
Water
This was the first poster of the series made, and also took the longest. I was inspired by diluting ink in water to create these spread effects and I wanted to recreate that. The ink bleed/water stains were created by constant displacing, fading, layer editing, and leveling.
Air
This was created by mostly using layer blending modes and playing with the layer styles. I also had to create a custom brush and drew it around the perimeter of the word to create a cloudy or thick fog look.
